How to Perform
Explain the examination and obtain consent, with a chaperone present. Position the patient (commonly left lateral decubitus with knees drawn up). Inspect the perianal skin, anus, and perineum. Lubricate a gloved index finger, ask the patient to bear down to relax the sphincter, and insert the finger gently. Assess resting sphincter tone, then sweep the finger to palpate the rectal walls for masses or tenderness and, in men, palpate the prostate for size, contour, consistency, and nodules. On withdrawal, note any stool or blood on the glove.
