How to Perform

Strike a 512 Hz tuning fork and place its base on the mastoid process behind the ear (bone conduction). When the patient reports the sound has faded, immediately move the still-vibrating tines next to the opening of the ear canal (air conduction) and ask whether the sound is heard again. Test each ear. Normally air conduction is still heard after bone conduction has faded and is louder (a 'positive Rinne'); the contrasting result is bone conduction heard as long as or longer than air conduction.
