How to Perform

Stand behind the patient and observe the pelvis (the iliac crests or posterior superior iliac spines). Ask the patient to stand on one leg by lifting the other foot off the ground, and watch the pelvis. A positive sign is the pelvis dropping on the side of the raised (non-stance) leg; normally the pelvis stays level or rises slightly on the side of the raised leg.
