How to Perform
Use a curvilinear probe with the patient supine or in a left lateral decubitus position. Place the probe in the right upper quadrant in a subcostal or intercostal position angled toward the right shoulder, and identify the gallbladder as an anechoic, pear-shaped structure; trace it along its long axis to the main lobar fissure and portal triad. Scan completely through it in two planes and evaluate the wall, the lumen, and the adjacent common bile duct.
