Lung Ultrasound (Pleural)

🎬
Video coming September 2026

How to Perform

Place a probe (linear, phased-array, or curvilinear) perpendicular to the chest wall over an intercostal space at the anterior chest, identifying the pleural line between two rib shadows. Observe for lung sliding (the shimmering to-and-fro movement at the pleural line); use M-mode to display the seashore sign when sliding is present or the barcode (stratosphere) sign when it is absent. Scan the dependent lateral and posterior chest and the costophrenic recess to assess for pleural effusion (an anechoic space above the diaphragm).
